Earthwatch, the international environmental charity, is inviting volunteers to join one of its 350 expeditions to 60 research projects in 2009.
The charity supports its environmental research projects by providing funds and paying volunteers who work alongside leading field scientists and researchers. Earthwatch projects are divided into four research areas – climate change, oceans, ecosystem services and cultural heritage. Since 1971 the worldwide organisation has recruited more than 85,000 volunteers in support of 2,800 field research projects in 118 countries. The results of Earthwatch research help ensure the long-term survival of endangered species and habitats, by influencing conservation decisions at local, regional and international level.
Costs to join an expedition range from £175 to £2,550 and expeditions last from three to 18 days. The price paid is a charitable donation, which funds the research. Accommodation, food, training, emergency medical evacuation and the offsetting of greenhouse gases is included in the price, but flights are additional. Volunteers must be over the age of 18, unless participating on a team for teenagers or family team.
