Lavender gatherers required in Carshalton

The award-winning lavender field in Carshalton already looks stunning but volunteers are needed to help prepare for the annual harvest.

Carshalton Lavender, a local group run by volunteers which cares for the field, is hoping to get more sets of hands to help with the preparation on Saturday July 4.

In return, helpers will be welcome to refreshments on the day and a voucher for a free bunch of lavender at the harvest, which is set to happen on July 25 and 26.

A spokeswoman for the group said: “It’s simple and satisfying work in a serene but sociable setting. The task is mainly to pull grass out from the tops of the bushes so the lavender flowers can breathe and show off their true blue colour at the end of July.

“It will be a great way to meet some new people and shape up, or top up your tan, for summer, at your own pace, on a beautiful allotment site. At the same time, you will be supporting your local community and heritage project which also has great benefits for wildlife.”

Those willing to help should wear suitable clothing, sun screen and a hat, and are asked to bring gardening gloves if possible.

Volunteers should go to the Oaks Way entrance gate to Stanley Road allotments between 10am and 1pm on the day.
