Grow your own advice from Croydon allotment holders

For those who want to know about how to cook food foraged from your garden, a Croydon allotment society can help.

The group offers some of the best value garden skills training in the south east and the course has been compared very favourably ones that are more expensive and have a less hands-on approach.

Tim Gundry-White, of Spa Hill Allotment Society, said: “The whole course is over two weekends, but it may be done as a whole or part, though it is hoped that people do all the course as each event complements the other.”

The first day of the two-day course covers digging beds to plant crops in, sowing seeds in containers and composting.

On the second day students will discover how to plant seeds directly into seed beds, deal with raised plants and learn the best way to grow onions, garlic and potatoes.

Mr Gundry-White said: “This is a great chance for total the novice and experienced gardeners alike to get down and learn something new.

“The training is very hands on and even the most seasoned gardeners have found it useful.

“Anyone thinking of joining us should wear comfortable clothes, suitable shoes and be prepared if there is bad weather.”

The two day course running on February 21 and April 18 costs £50 for both days with tea, coffee and lunch provided, or students can take part in just one of the days for £30.

Included in the cost is membership of the Spa Hill Allotment Society.
