An ethical second-hand shop in the centre of Croydon will benefit from a share of £8m from the London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB) to create the world’s largest reuse network.
Croydon Appliance Reuse Centre (Arc) is hoping to be a part of the project. It recently lost its funding from Croydon Council, which announced sweeping cuts across the voluntary sector.
The funding will go to the London Community Resource Network, which will set up the network to deal with the 65,000 tonnes of household products are thrown out by Londoners each year.
Ray Barwick, an Arc manager, met scheme supporter Joanna Lumley as London Mayor Boris Johnson announced the funding.
The London Reuse Network aims to divert 17,000 tonnes from landfill over the project’s first two years.
